Protection from intruders can only be maximized, because there is always a way to defeat any system; even a bank vault can't resist much more than 2 hours to an elaborate attack. Only a safe room/bunker in conjunction with a defense system can offer real protection. DEFENSE SYSTEMS CAN GO FROM MULTILAYER ALARMS, VOICE WARNINGS, INTERNET MONITORING AND RESPONSE, TO BEING ABLE TO DEFEND AGAINST A MILITARY FORCE ATTACK, WHICH WOULD INCLUDE THINGS LIKE REMOTE OPERATED FIRE ARMS, FLAME THROWERS, AND OTHER EFFECTIVE HIGH POWER HIGHLY DESTRUCTIVE DEVICES, (SOME THAN CAN'T BE DISCUSSED HERE) IN CONJUNCTION WITH A SEALED LIFE SUSTAINING COMPARTMENT THAT WOULD ACT AS A COMMAND POST.
Windows can have safety bars, exterior and interior shutters, and shutters could be weather/alarm activated. Safety bars will prevent anyone from been able to enter the house at anytime.
Alarm activated double doors with 1/4 inch steel being the minimum thickness with safety grill, will offer the best protection. Doors can be made to operate by card, fingerprint, chip or other, so no one can enter the house at anytime if not authorized. It's possible to also create a secure hallway where intruders will be trapped if they would defeat the front door. This hallway will have an extra door closing behind them as they enter.
Blast resistant doors are available, such as those made by Andair, even if those are better suited for bunker type shelters, they can be incorporated in a regular house or the same principles applied to all of the house doors and windows.
Garage doors, due to their size, need special attention and a sliding type or double door will offer the best protection, again 1/4 inch steel being minimum thickness with a very strong steel frame with the ability to bolt it shut. The door between the garage and house has to receive the same treatment as the front door.
Any house built with safety in mind must have a serious fence around it with multilevel continuous monitoring and a multilevel alarm system that would activate the safety mode also on windows and doors, and it could go as far as having Internet monitoring and Internet activated defenses.
