Earth sheltered homes offer a lot of advantages over conventional homes and are the best solution if we want to waste less energy. They are easy and cheap to build too and the government should be incentivating their use, not the garbage they do now all over the world. In most areas a earth sheltered home uses little to no energy to condition the inside temperature, plus they are fire safe, if they have steel doors and shutters. They will maintain a livable inside temperature — even in extreme climates, without power. Why they aren’t the norm, tells something about the smart race we pretend to be. They will need a defensible raised tower/position to be able to offer intrusion protection, but that can be easily incorporated into them.
Earthships have some good ideas, but most there are clueless about safety and proper safe building — look for your yourself.
